2 Brief Introduction to the Technical Committee

Visualization and visual analytics is a discipline that studies the visual presentation, interaction methods and technologies of information. The research on visualization and visual analytics is developing rapidly: data objects are expanding from traditional single data sources to multi-source, multi-dimensional and multi-scale data; users of visualization are extending from expert users to a wide range of non-specific groups; meanwhile, the research places more emphasis on the scalability of methods and the simplicity of development. The basic theories of visualization and visual analytics task analysis, visualization design and visualization evaluation have achieved considerable progress; breakthroughs have been made in visualization methods for scientific data, high-dimensional data, graph data and text data; the coupling between visual analytics methods and simulation has become closer; attention has been paid to the construction of domain-oriented visualization languages; new visualization interaction methods have become more diversified. Typical application fields of visualization such as medical and health care, numerical simulation, public security and financial security have been further promoted, while new application fields such as cybersecurity, urban governance, industrial internet and humanistic arts are developing rapidly.

The Technical Committee on Visualization and Visual Analytics of the China Society for Image and Graphics (CSIG) is committed to promoting the development and progress of the discipline of visualization and visual analytics in China and surrounding regions, establishing a normalized academic exchange mechanism, and facilitating talent training and exchange. It also unites domestic visualization practitioners and domain scientists to deepen the exchange of research and application of visualization and visual analytics among various disciplines, explore the development direction and opportunities of visualization and visual analytics in the era of big data, build a communication platform for in-depth discussion on cutting-edge visualization technologies and applications with renowned experts, entrepreneurs and application departments at home and abroad, and promote the formation of a new ecology of collaborative development of industry, academia, research and application in the field of visualization and visual analytics.

The construction philosophy of the Technical Committee on Visualization and Visual Analytics is to build a member contact network, enhance members' academic capabilities, establish a democratic academic platform, promote disciplinary talent development, lead the international academic frontier, and integrate the industry-academia-research-military system. The committee holds various activities every year, including the China Conference on Visualization and Visual Analytics, Summit Forums, "Entering Universities" events, and strategic seminars. The China Conference on Visualization and Visual Analytics has been successfully held for 8 consecutive sessions in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Wuhan and other places, with more than 800 participants each year. It has effectively promoted the development of the visualization academia and industry, and enhanced China's influence in the research and application of visualization and visual analytics.

5 Representative Achievements

1) Basic Theories and Methods of Visual Representation and Interactive Visual Analytics for Complex Data

Core Researchers: Chen Wei, Wu Yingcai, Qu Huamin, Cai Deng, Zhou Kun

Award: Won the First-Class Zhejiang Provincial Natural Science Award in 2021

For the first time, it revealed the correlation between visual analytics and machine learning in the geometric representation of high-dimensional data. It explored the equivalence between the visual representation of massive data and its simplified version at the visual perception level. It discovered the decomposability of visual representation of complex data. It systematically proposed a new process of exploratory visual analytics and innovated the paradigm of interactive analysis and reasoning of complex events. The originality in representation, novelty in presentation and efficiency in analysis of the achievements have been positively affirmed by 11 academicians, Turing Award winners, and more than 50 ACM/IEEE Fellows. It has cultivated 8 national high-level talents, including National Distinguished Young Scholars, Yangtze River Scholars, National Ten-Thousand Talents Program recipients, and Excellent Young Scholars.

2) Visual Analytics of Unstructured Data

Core Researcher: Professor Liu Shixia, School of Software, Tsinghua University

Award: Won the 2022 IEEE VGTC Visualization Technical Achievement Award

The award was granted in recognition of contributions to text visual analytics and visualization-based interpretable machine learning. The corresponding achievements have been applied in Lenovo's big data solutions, China Aerospace Science and Industry's auxiliary case-handling platform, Siemens' industrial on-site analysis tools, Microsoft Power BI, IBM Cognos, etc.
